WHL Consulting community tourism project, SADC, market access This project was commissioned bythe UN World Tourism Organization Sustainable Tourism (UNWTO) - Sustianable Tourism Elimination of Poverty Program. This community-based tourism project included work in all of the 14 countries that make up the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC).


The project was run through the Regional Tourism Association of Southern Africa (RETOSA) and captured data on over 200 enterprises. The main output of the program was the design and development of the worlds most exstensive community-tourism database for any region. The online web directory can be seen at http://www.community-tourism-africa.com and where there are crossover between the products and whl.travel listings an affiliate link was created to make the site bookable.In addition a Market Access training manual and course was developed to assist these community based tourism enterprises be in a better position to capture greater market. The training was piloted in both Tanzania and South Africa, and was the percursor to the WHL Consulting Market Access Training Seminars.

The director of RETOSA at the time presented the consultants working on the project with a letter of commedation to the UNWTO secretary general. A copy of the letter can be downloaded here.
