Balkans Hotel Market Access Program - Albania

Country and region: Albania, Europe Region

Project date: 11/2/2009

Client: IFC PEP-SE

The key objective of the IFC Balkan Hotel Market Access Program was to contribute to the opening up of the Balkan region to the lucrative independent travelers market introducing  new travel products such as on line booking which will lead to improvement of the local tourist companies quality of services and increase of the number of independent travelers visiting the region. One important fact is that we have increased the visibility of the region through IFC BHMA web portals with more than 150.000 unique visitors and 620.000 page views. By developing the on-line booking web portals with on-line payment option, the project was a pioneer in the tourism industry in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro and Albania. Consequently, as a spinoff of the project a number of similar projects have been initiated throughout the region, which have increased the number of independents tourists visits.

The success of the project was best summed up by IFC Project Manager, Denis Mesihovic:
"Thanks to you, our Market Place Operators and WHL, we managed to achieve all program objectives. BHMA program was recognized by the IFC management as a successful and efficient program, with significant impact on regional tourism development. The fact that BHMA program revenue for the first year of the operations was three times higher that the program budget/expenses speaks for it's self. At the end I would like to thank you for being our partner in the program implementation, for you dedicated work on the development of web portals and your hospitality I have enjoyed when I was visiting you. Wish you a lot of success in you future work and hope we will have the opportunity to work together on some new projects."

In Albania the project developed and supported two sites: http://www.shkoder-albanian-alps.com/ and http://www.travel-tirana.com/
