Market Access Program in Tanzania - Phase I

Country and region: Tanzania, Africa Region

Project date: 4/10/2008

Client: TPSF, PSCP

Managed a 2-year project for the Tanzania Private Sector Foundation which included the first iteration of Market Readiness Assessments. These first assessments were all done on paper using Excel as the database to store the data and compare. In addition, two professional photographers (Paul Hicks and Javed Jafferji) were hired to undertake the digital content collection which included:
  • Taking 7-15 high resolution digital photographs of each of the properties making sure to capture all industry standard shots (rooms, facilities, entryway, host, etc)
  • A sample brochure was produced
  • Written interesting content based on Unique Selling Points was generated and presented in word version
To kick start the process we delivered three half-day awareness seminars in Dar Es Salaam, Zanzibar and Arusha for tourism service providers and it was determined that this awareness seminar at the beggining of the project was not sufficient training for the capacity development of the SME accomodation providers so a second workshop was commissioned by the TPSF. The workshops, which have become the WHLC Market Access Training Seminars, were aimed at the managers and owners, and focused on the topics of sustainable tourism, website development, search engine optimization, product differentiation, product marketing and distribution. More detail of the Training Seminar Project can be found at Tanzania Market Access Program Phase II.

The project was set up to support the portals that were commissioned by the IFC SMART Program.
