Private Sector Sustainable Tourism Awareness Workshops

Country and region: Global, Global

Project date: 4/24/2007

Client: SNV, IFC MPDF

SNV and the IFC MPDF decided to work with WHL to develop, organize and manage a series of two workshops aimed at creating awareness amongst private sector tour operators in the developing world about the practices and benefits of sustainable tourism. WHL was selected to be a project partner due to the unique nature of the business model whereby every booking portal that is developed is owned and operated by a local inbound tour operator. This aspect was important because of the need to be able to identify appropriate private sector partners from a wide variety of developing world countries and for them to have a business incentive to care about sustainable tourism.

The first workshop was held in February 2006 in Saigon, Vietnam and was attended by 35 representatives from 18 countries. There were operators in attendence from Southeast Asia, the Pacifc, Southern Africa and Eastern Europe. Sustainable tourism presentations were made by Dr. Xavier Font from The International Centre for Responsible Tourism (ICRT) at Leeds Metropolitan University, a representative from the National Geographic Center for Sustainable Destinations and sustainable tourism experts from the IFC and SNV.

The second workshop was held in April 2007 in Siem Reap, Cambodia and over the year the WHL network grew exponentially and was attended by 110 representatives from 52 countries. There were operators in attendence from Southeast Asia, South Asia, the Pacifc, East & Southern Africa, Central & South America, the Caribbean and Eastern Europe. Again, Dr. Xavier Font was in attendance along with sustainable tourism experts from the IFC and SNV. In addtion, a representative from Ashoka and their Changemakers Competition were in attendance to present the launching of the Geotourism Competition.
